The Financial services authority has secured the first criminal conviction for insider dealing. Thankfully it was not an accountant! (It was a solicitor) Two days before a takeover was made public from Motorola the Solicitor ,which had acted fror TTP communications for a number of years, was told in confidence that Motorola was planning the takeover. The solicitor's father in law made a substantial profit on shares he held for three months, and gave his son in law 1/2 the profit. Each person made £24,459.60 each!
The Solicitor received a prison sentence of eight months, and the father in law received the same eight months, but suspended for one year.
Not only is it more than likely that the Solicitor will be struck off, ruining his career, but the next family gathering could be quite interesting!
